You might be wondering about the individual behind AmericanRenegade.Party. I’m Moses Gunner, though some may know me from my work as Matthew R. Mitchell, author of “My Higher Power: How Science, History, and Recovery Led Me to a Faith That Makes Sense.”

My journey to founding this platform wasn’t a conventional one. It was forged through significant personal challenges. After drifting from a childhood faith into teenage cynicism, my twenties were consumed by a battle with alcoholism. Throughout this tumultuous period, my work as a cook was a crucial anchor. No matter how difficult things became, or how much I had drunk the previous day, I always showed up for my shifts. That discipline, born in the heat of the kitchen, undoubtedly played a role in keeping me grounded. This path eventually led to homelessness, multiple near-death experiences, and ultimately, incarceration.

It was within the confines of jail, particularly during the isolation of COVID-19 lockdowns, and later through mandated rehabilitation programs and sober living, that a period of intensive self-discovery and intellectual exploration began. Officially diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Agoraphobia, I initially engaged with conventional treatments, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the 12-step principles of AA/NA, and a period on SSRIs.

However, the efficacy of SSRIs felt limited, prompting further personal investigation. Reflecting on my experiences and family history, including a half-brother on the autism spectrum, I came to a personal understanding that many of my lifelong struggles might be better understood through the lens of being on the spectrum myself. This perspective suggested that my years of alcohol abuse were, in large part, an attempt to self-medicate an often-overwhelming sensory and cognitive experience. Dissatisfied with merely managing symptoms, I shifted my focus towards addressing what I perceived as underlying issues, particularly brain inflammation. My current approach emphasizes targeted nutritional supplements and lifestyle adjustments over pharmaceutical interventions that I found to be less effective.

This intensive period also involved a deep dive into quantum physics, cosmology, biblical history, and theology. My goal was to find a faith, a concept of a Higher Power, that could reconcile with scientific understanding, historical evidence, and my own lived reality.

Beyond these personal explorations, I’ve always possessed a deep fascination with numbers and a drive for financial prudence. While I am not a credentialed financial advisor, I dedicate significant time to understanding how to maximize savings and effectively combat the corrosive effects of inflation. My research has led me to a firm conviction against fiat currency, which I view as an inherently flawed system. Consequently, I personally choose not to hold assets in fiat. It’s my belief that the abandonment of sound money principles, like the gold standard, was driven by a desire to fund endless conflicts, with little regard for the devastating impact on the financial stability of the middle class. A core aim of AmericanRenegade.Party is to explore and discuss viable alternatives, seeking ways we can collectively navigate and potentially circumvent a system that seems designed to erode our purchasing power.

Today, I work as a restaurant manager. Having navigated sobriety, I’ve been genuinely surprised to discover an affinity for the front-of-house operations, a different facet of an industry that has been part of my life for so long.

I am not a formally credentialed scientist, theologian, or financial planner. Rather, I am an individual driven by relentless curiosity and what I term a “stubborn, persistent open-mindedness.” My insights are drawn from direct experience, rigorous self-examination, and a sincere desire to share a message of hope and intellectual honesty.
